1978 – Residents’ progress advances quality of support

By 1978 the children who had started at Westoning were adults and some people were growing beyond the available facilities. This pushed the organisation to consider how to respond: Better equipped facilities, use of new methods for education, and, above all, staff development – a theme which has been developed and remains central to the present day.

An outstanding feature of the year has been the progress in the attainment of different residents, outstripping the equipment available, making the provision of new and better workshops even more urgent.

We need to extend specialist expertise in our staff, we need to be aware of the very latest techniques and to provide the best in terms of individual accommodation, care and training. We must extend our integration programme and we must plan and provide for old age care. Nothing is more urgent, because our residents are now demanding these things of us. This means large-scale investment in order to maintain the impetus, which our residents have created.
