In pursuit of providing opportunities for a meaningful and enjoyable life for children and adults under its care, MacIntyre invested in improved leisure facilities and adventurous holidays for the residents. An undercover play area was completely refurbished in that year in Westoning enabling people to take part in indoor sports, disco evenings, film shows and many other activities. For the more physically active, a new hard-surface outside play area provided opportunities for improving other sports skills. In the same fashion, resident holidays have always been highlights of each year, but even more in 1984. Amongst others, such as a highly enjoyable week in an adventure centre in Dorset, and a fortnight in Yugoslavia, which according to the Annual Review 1984 was not only fun but also ‘a successful exercise in public relations’ for residents and staff.
