In December 2001, a new fundraising idea emerged, the MacIntyre Monster Marathon. The original idea was that a core team would undertake a continuous walk from one end of the country to the other, in a route covering as many of MacIntyre service areas as possible, while picking up supporters on the way. Thus the whole of Maclntyre could be part of one big project. Many people contributed with suggestions, volunteered time, giving support and sponsorship. In 2003 the Monster Marathon took place. Monster Marathon walkers were invited to a breakfast reception at the New Forest Council offices, Southampton television came to interview MacIntyre representatives. Maclntyre in the North West prepared an entertainment programme, including the ‘Dance using Wheelchairs’ by the service users and staff from the West Cheshire project, while the Warrington Drama Group presented the play ‘Shakespeare, eat your heart out!’. 150 walkers took part in the marathon event, which included a three mile sponsored walk to Central Milton Keynes, and a four miles walk from Ledburn to Wingrave school. ‘Funds raised from the “Monster Marathon 2003” have been used to set up the Warrington Lifelong Learning Centre’.
